A blue Dave Hansen Whitewater raft crashing through a massive, splashing wave on the Snake River.

We won’t sugarcoat it: the river during peak runoff is definitely chilly! This is pure, fresh snowmelt flowing right out of the Tetons—meaning you’re literally rafting on last winter’s ski powder. But don’t let the mountain temps hold you back from the biggest waves of the year. Conquering runoff season can be as easy and simple as wearing the right clothes and packing the right gear.

First step…wetsuits, wetsuits, wetsuits. Now, some people may think they look a little unfashionable, but out here on the Snake? Neoprene (and warmth and comfort) is the ultimate high-fashion statement. Neoprene is the best possible material to keep you warm in cold water. Picture it as insulation: it traps heat and acts as a thermal barrier, preventing your body heat from getting overwhelmed by the freezing water. When we say the tighter the better, we don’t just mean because it’s slimming. When a wetsuit gets wet, a layer of water will seep between your skin and the snug-fitting neoprene. Your body heat quickly warms this layer of trapped water, which is then held in place by the suit, keeping you insulated from the cold water outside. So, though a wetsuit does not keep you dry, it keeps you 100x warmer than any quick-dry sunshirt, swimsuit, or cotton hoodie ever could.

That being said, definitely bring layers! Underneath the wetsuit, you can wear your swimsuit or even your undergarments, the more neoprene touching your skin the warmer you’ll be. Over the wetsuit, feel free to layer up with splash jackets, fleeces, or windbreaks. Don’t stress if you don’t have any of these layers, the wetsuit will do just fine. After the trip, you’ll have a chance to change out of your wetsuit before hopping back on the bus, so we highly recommend packing towels and a warm change of clothes. A snack isn’t a bad idea either, our guides have a reputation for making sure you earn every bite.

Peak runoff brings some of the most thrilling waves of the year, and with the right gear, the chill won’t stand a chance against the thrill. As long as you’re packed, layered, and ready to embrace the neoprene lifestyle, you’re set for an unforgettable adventure.
